Message from the Chairman
Towards Building a Relation of Trust in Medical Care
Standardization and increased efficiency of medical care and EBM are being advocated, and transparency and accountability of medical care is a requirement in today’s society. With this, the question of how we manage health records and information has become an important issue. Medical records, which were only used in the past in their physical form, have now become health information having direct bearing on medical care. Today, health information management is recognized as an indispensable part of medical care.
Health information can be used to discover and prevent malpractice and to contribute to improving the quality of medical care. It can even be said that it is expected to help build a relation of trust in medical care.
However, there are still many problems associated with health information management, and numerous issues also need to be considered academically. There are also a number of issues that require our immediate attention, such as lifelong education for improving the quality of health information managers, preparation of a framework for international cooperation with WHO through the work of ICD, and the use of DPC.
Since its establishment in 1975 with medical staffs in charge of health information (record) management as principal members, Japan Society of Health Information Management has made steady development and made remarkable achievements, owing to the efforts of our predecessors. In 1981, it was certified as a registered organization of the Science Council of Japan. It has, as of today, a membership of more than 5,100.
The number of people certified as health information managers, who form the foundation of the Society’s membership, has surpassed 13,000 and is growing. It is proof that the medical community now widely recognizes the importance of health information managers. Clearly, health information managers are expected to play a greater role today.
These developments have made us all the more firm in our resolve that the Society must live up to its name as a central organizational for developing the science of health information (record) management in our country and address various issues surrounding health information management.
We look forward to your active participation in the Society.
