In the scientific research project, “Project for Preparing the Environment for Health Information Management,” funded by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the Society worked on improving the environment for health information management in Japan for three years starting in fiscal 2000. With the objective of improving the precision and international comparability of statistics in our country, the Society is also conducting investigation and analysis on the current state of health information management in a four-year project from fiscal 2006 to 2009. By examining coding precision and how it could be improved, the Society is working on improving the quality of health information in Japan.

In fiscal 2006, the ICD Expert Committee was established as a standing committee under the Statistics Committee of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s Social Security Council to consider matters related to ICD on a permanent basis. As a member of the ICD Expert Committee, the Society is participating, together with 24 other Japanese medical societies, in the revision of ICD towards creation of the new ICD-11.

At the request of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s Statistics and Information Department, the Society began cooperating in the revision of the current International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) in 2005. The Society brought its full efforts to bear particularly on indexing of translations of the yearly ICD-10 updates as well as the ICD-10 2003 version with cumulative updates.
